Insta-Love In YA - Unbreakable by Kami Garcia

Readers of young adult books, including myself, are always complaining about insta-love, where charters meet and are all of a sudden completely and totally in love but we see this everywhere, in t.v shows and movies, yet we don't complain about it here. I mean in almost every princess movie, mainly Disney princess movies, there are major cases of insta-love, which you don't realize when your six but when your 17 and in bed sick with a cold and find comfort in these movies it becomes obvious, the prince rescues the princess and they're automatically deeply in love with each other and live happily ever after, insta-love? Yes, but nobody cares because that's how things are supposed to be! So, why can't that apply to the book world? Yes, characters seem to be more realistic than an animated princess but my point is, no one cares when it happens in a movie so why do we judge so harshly when it's done in a book?
While I do feel it's better when you get to know the characters and get to see them fall in love sometimes insta-love is necessary, to move the plot along, to give the characters more substance, and also because we're talking about YA books, teenage characters who want to fall madly in love with a cute boy (or girl) with one look. Sure I love it more when you get to know the characters separately before they fall in love but that shouldn't be the only reason for disliking a book, now I'm not judging cause I tend to be horrible at this but I would like to think I'm getting better about it, if you have other reasons for not liking a certain book then fine but if that's the only thing you don't like I think we should try harder to understand why the author did it this way and try not to judge the book solely on this one thing.
Now there are some cases, I feel, where it is just the worst thing ever, there are different ways to do the whole insta-love thing, I hate it when it's done badly like in Wasteland when after all of three conversations together these two characters basically get married and then do it, it's weird, uncomfortable and gross. But also sometimes it has to be done and at least for me I've found that sometimes I can be a hypocrite because if I love the book and I love both the characters then I don't mind the insta-love, but if I don't like the book very much or I don't like one or both of the characters than it annoys me immensely. Like I said before I do think it's more enjoyable if you get to see the characters slowly fall for each other but also when it's like a fantasy book that it's focused on the romance I understand that sometimes there is a need for the insta love and sometimes you, as a reader, just have to accept it and learn to enjoy and love books despite this one fatal flaw. It can be done well where you don't even realize until you finish the book that it was insta-love and by then you love the book so much that it doesn't seem to matter. In conclusion I think that sometimes you have to cut a book, or an author, a break and decide to love it for all the good things in a book rather than hate it for this one thing.

This post was inspired by Unbreakable by Kami Garcia because this book does have some insta-love going on but I didn't mind it, I still loved the book and the characters. See my review of this book here.

The Summer I Wrote A Book Update #14 :The End

As you may know Saturday the 21st was the official last day of summer which was also the day I had set myself for being finished writing the first main draft of my book and (Drumroll) I finished!!! Now technically it was Sunday morning at about 2:23am but I hadn't slept yet so it still counts!

That's right I actually finished my first main draft, not like a short vague draft like the first full thing that just might need some(read: a lot) of revisions, was done by my self appointed deadline. I am so excited and slightly proud. I mean I am officially done writing my first book, revisions don't count for this, and that puts me so much closer to maybe possibly eventually being published.  Even still I do have a lot to still do with and I shall not stop working on it until it is perfect or at least really close to my vision of perfect. =)

I will still post updates on my writing once in a while, but I hope to get back to more regular posts, and when I do do these posts they'll just be called like Writing Updates because Summer is over now.

Word Count - wise -
Overall - right not with the completed first draft before revisions is - 100,610 words
Which means that in 21days, when I started trying to seriously finish it by my self appointed deadline, I wrote around - 52,954 words!
Saturday I started at - 91,881 - which means I wrote about - 8,729 words Saturday which is a personal record for me. =)

P.s.  Question- is it wrong if I maybe sometimes use to decide who a chapter in my book is going to be told by?

Review: Cress by Marissa Meyer

Where to start? This book is just so good, I think it might be the best book I've read this year and I've read allot of good books. Warning this review is long and I might fan girl just a little(read:a ton), also spoilers ahead!
For those of you who don't know Cress is the third book of the Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer, I have been slightly (Read: completely) obsessed with this series since I read the first book Cinder earlier this year. It comes out in February 2014 but I was lucky enough to get an ARC at comic-con, I've been putting off reading it because I knew it would just make me want the next one which I don't think is out until early 2015! But I finally read it because I couldn't wait any longer and all my fears came true, why does 2015 have to be so far away!?

About the book - Rapunzel's tower is a satellite. She can't let down her hair - or her guard.

In this third book in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, who has been trapped on a satellite since childhood with only her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker – unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing stop her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only ones who can

Spoiler Alert!

Review - A slightly lame review of an amazingly awesome book. -
Have you ever read a book that is so good that you can't even get over just how good it is and every time you try to explain it all you can think is "Oh my gerd (a lovely combination of oh my god and ermahgerd) it's so good, oh my gerd, oh my gerd” and then every time you even consider starting another book all you can think is just that there is no way that it will be as good as that one. That is how good Cress is, I mean after Scarlet I didn't think it was possible for these books to get even better and more awesome but it is. There are literally no words I can think of that can describe just how good this book is and I literally do not think I can wait until the next one comes out.

Plot - I feel like there was definitely more action and plot development in this one than the others. It's so good, you won't ever want to put it down and you never want it to end. It's intense and thrilling and I want more!
Cinder really steps up in this one and there is literally never a dull moment whether it's from action or romance, someone getting kidnapped or someone about to be kissed, there's always something going on to stop you from putting the book down. Also we learn more about the Lunars and the plague in this book and everything is just so awesome. It's so awesome that I can't think of a coherent thing to write in this review!

Characters - The characters were my favorite thing about this book, I love the new character of Cress she's one of my favorites, but more than that I loved the way Cinder kinda transformed in this book, finally accepting her part in everything and turning into a real leader. I loved the character development in Cinder and Thorne both, I really started to love Thorne in this book and Cinder just started to reveal her badassery and it's just awesome. I also loved Cress, I love the way she did seem kinda naive and a little delusional after her years of solitude in the satellite, and I loved seeing her evolve throughout the book and become stronger in her own way while still remaining a little different because who wouldn't be a little messed up after that, right? I just think the character development was the best in the series so far not just with the main characters but also with Dr. Erland and Kai and Iko, I just love them all so much.
One thing I've loved since the beginning with this series is that the villain is believably evil, where in some books it doesn't feel like the villain is all that scary and bad, and I liked seeing Levana kinda lose her grip a little, but some how become even more angry and evil, she's just a really good bad guy, if that makes sense?
Also, the little bit we see of Winter? Oh my gerd, it's just so good and makes you want to see so much more of her, I was literally like jumping in my seat when I read the part she first comes into thinking like "Oh my gerd, it's Winter, isn't? It has to be Winter!" and it's intense and awesome.
Lastly, Cress and Thorne? Ahh, just so good.

Overall feels - I need more! It's literally my favorite book that I've read since Mark Of Athena came out last year. I really don't think that I can wait for the next one, I think that might spontaneously combust with anticipation! Definitely the best book in the series, so far, and it makes you really really really want more like RIGHT THIS MINUTE, I'm telling you this as a friend it might be best for your health to wait to read this one until like the day before Winter comes out, I'm serious, I can't even look at another book right now.
Now seriously while my review may suck this book is just so amazingly good and you must read it as soon as it comes out and if you haven't yet read Cinder or Scarlet I will hunt you down and force you to, cause seriously you have to read it if you like young adult books at all, there is no other requirement, if you like young adult books you must read these. No objections. =)

The Summer I Wrote A Book Update #11

One thing I find myself doing allot recently is jumping around, I'll be writing the beginning of this chapter and then get inspired and figure out how to do this part that is coming up at the end of the chapter and jump ahead to tha,t then go back and do something that will happen in the middle or whatever, so then I have to go back through and fill in all the other stuff and it works, but it's also a bit annoying. It's just I get this idea in my head and I have to go and write it before I forget everything, right? Right?

It's September 3rd and I have 18 days until my self appointed deadline and I'm making progress!

Yesterdays Stats-
Word Count Yesterday (Before Writing) - 55575
Word Count Yesterday (After) - 60045 (As you may have noticed I did hit my goal for yesterday.)

Plans For Today - 6,000

What I Might Actually Get Done Today - 4,000*

*My overall goal for this week is to hit 75,000 ad then I will reward myself with some new books. =)

The Summer I Wrote A Book Update #10

I feel like I've actually been make good progress the last couple days, now I just have to keep it up for 19 more days and then call it good! Yay! =( I've actually been having a lot of fun writing I feel like I'm finding my rhythm and getting to the good part in my book where everything picks up pace and it's just a lot of fun at the moment, which is good right? Writing should be fun especially if it's what you want to do for the rest of your life. =)

Today is September 2nd and I have 19 days left until my self appointed deadline and a bit less than half a book to write. That's what I call progress!

Yesterdays Stats-
Word Count Yesterday (Before Writing) - 52142
Word Count Yesterday (After) - 55575
Total Words Written Yesterday - 3433

For Today -
Word Count - 55575
Plans For Today - 7,000
What I Might Actually Get Done Today - 4,000 (I want to get to 60000 if possible which is 4425 which seems reasonable, right?)

I did get less done yesterday than the day before but still I'm making progress and I'm happy with what I've done so far. I would rather write 1,000 words that I love than 3,000 that I think are meh.

Review: Unbreakable by Kami Garcia

As you may know I got a singed ARC of this at Comic-Con and I figured I should read it before it actually comes out seeing as how that is the point of an ARC and so I read it and I loved it and it's so awesome.

About - Goodreads description -
I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Review -
Short Version - Let me start out by saying that I love books with ghosts and demons and secret societies and this book has all of that, so what could possibly go wrong? Nothing. The characters? Awesome. The plot? Amazing. The execution of said plot? Epic. It's fast paced and intriguing. The characters are interesting and complex. I just really loved this book, it as creepy aspects and while it does have some romance it's not centered around the romance, it was more about friendship than romance but it does have romance. More importantly it's filled with ghosts and demons and near deaths by ghosts and demons and it's just awesome. If you want a fun fast paced easy yet awesome read look no further than Unbreakable because really it's epic.

Long Version -
I know I say this allot but this book really pulls you in from the beginning with an interesting main character and an awesome premise, I literally could not put this book down. There is plenty of action and not too much romance it's like the perfect balance in my opinion.

Characters -
I loved Kennedy as a character, I loved seeing her relationship with her mom and the way she wanted to fit in with the legion even though she knew she didn't belong and I thought she was just a really good and strong character.
I could be considered a hypocrite about this, but I still believe that while it does have something like insta love it's done in such a way that it doesn't feel like insta love. Having said that the romance wasn't my favorite part I like Jared off and on and loved Lukas until he tackled Jared, I didn't like that you were never sire if he even liked Kennedy or was just trying to spite Jared and you never know how she feels about him, I guess it will come into the next book at some point.
But I loved all the characters especially Alara and Priest, I loved how they grew throughout the book and they became two of my favorites by the end alongside Kennedy. With Kennedy I liked that she's not perfect and that she never wanted to save the world even when she wanted to belong with the legion, I liked that she was never sure of herself I thought It made her stronger as a character that she could be badass without realizing that she is badass. My favorite thing though was her relationships with her mom and eventually Alara and Priest. With the twins I was more interested in their relationship with each other than in how they felt about Kennedy.

Plot -

Personally I love anything with ghosts and demons if it's done good and it is definitely done good in this book. I loved the history of the legion and honestly how Kennedy was awesome and kick-ass even if she didn't believe she was part of it. I loved everything about the legion it was so cool and interesting. This book really keeps you guessing throughout the whole book and you're left with a crap load of unanswered questions, and it's pure turtore!
Since I feel like this review sucks and is totally not doing justice to the book I'm gonna wrap it up - Overall this book is awesome and intriguing and just overall epic. I would recommend this book to anyone but even more so if you like books with evil ghosts and secret societies and a big evil demon, not to mention a kickass female main character who isn't perfect and doesn't want to be the one to save the world. =)
