How I got it - Bought on Kindle
In the city of Kersh, everyone must eliminate their genetic Alternate twin, raised by another family, before their twentieth birthday. West Grayer, 15, has trained as a fighter, and has one month to hunt and kill her Alt. A tragic misstep shakes her confidence. Guilty, grieving, she feels unworthy, runs from her Alt and from love - both can destroy her.
My Rating: 4 Stars
This book starts off right after a funeral. Our main character, West and her brother Luc have just buried their father when they learn that their best friend Chord has just become Active which means he has 1 month to kill his Alt. a twin who looks just like him, but was raised by a different family, or be killed by his Alt. or they will both die. West takes it upon herself to make Chord go after his Alt and one thing leads to another and Luc ends up dead(this isn't a big spoiler because it happens in like the first chapter). West has issues dealing with the grief and the fact that her whole family is now dead and any day now she could become active. She meets the weapons teacher, Baer, and he leads her to the strikers, a group of hired assassins who kill clients Alts so that they don't have to. Now my main problem with this book is we have this awesome premise in this unique world with the twins and the "board" and all these awesome factors but it never goes into detail, there is no revolution, no fighting back, just going along with it and trying not to die. Which is very disappointing.
All the way up until the end I thought I loved it, there were a few things that annoyed me but overall I was really liking it but after the end I'm kinda really conflicted. I know there is a second book coming but the first one ends like it's a stand alone, but either way I wanted more, I wanted to see West fight back and realize how completely wrong "the board" is. I get that that is probably what is going to happen in the second but I thought there would at least be something of that in this book and I think it would have made it allot better.
The whole middle and end is about her tracking and hiding and being hunted by her Alt and I thought that that would end in the middle and we'd move on to maybe more things with the Strikers and hopefully some rebelling against the Board and I guess not doing that is part of what made the story unique but it also kinda made it pointless.
Chord - He was an awesome character though I wish he had been in it more. He's sweet and protective but also he kinda steps back and lets West do her own thing and respects her space and everything, he puts up with a lot and is still always there for West when she needs him and I totally respect that.
West - I have a love hate relationship with this character - Love that she's a total badass and doesn't just sit back and let the men handle the work.
The Setting - The dystopian world in this is really cool and highly interesting I just wanted to know more and see more, I wanted West to join with the Strikers or Bear and take down the man(Board)!
Alts. - I liked the whole Alt. thing it's unique that everyone born has a twin that they eventually have to kill if they want to live, plus it brings into account the who really is worthy? and then there;s the whole thing of dealing with the fact that you have to kill someone who looks like you, who could have been you, it's all very interesting.
West - I hated that she was kinda annoying. She pressures Chord into going after his Alt and then some bad things happen and to deal she becomes a Striker, killing Alts so she doesn't have to feel anything and then she pushes Chord away and runs from her Alt even though that's the one thing her dying brother asked her not to do and all this is because she feels guilt over her dead brother, how does that make sense?
More Please - More info on everything please, like I know it's mentioned and explained somewhat about the whole board thing and maybe it's because I read another book while reading this one but I don't even really remember the explanation. I just wanted this to be a bigger part of the book.
Striker Training - I feel like we were lead to believe that West was going to be getting training from the Strikers I thought this meant they actually train her to fight, no. She's just thrown into it so she learns while on the job and I just didn't think it was all that great. I would have rather her gotten real training that would feel more realistic to me.
Overall - I just wanted it to go farther than it did, hopefully the second book will make up for it and I am definitely looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.
