Release date: June 17th 2014
Series: Dark Metropolis #1
Cabaret meets Cassandra Clare-a haunting magical thriller set in a riveting 1930s-esque world. Sixteen-year-old Thea Holder's mother is cursed with a spell that's driving her mad, and whenever they touch, Thea is chilled by the magic, too. With no one else to contribute, Thea must make a living for both of them in a sinister city, where danger lurks and greed rules. Thea spends her nights waitressing at the decadent Telephone Club attending to the glitzy clientele. But when her best friend, Nan, vanishes, Thea is compelled to find her. She meets Freddy, a young, magnetic patron at the club, and he agrees to help her uncover the city's secrets-even while he hides secrets of his own. Together, they find a whole new side of the city. Unrest is brewing behind closed doors as whispers of a gruesome magic spread. And if they're not careful, the heartless masterminds behind the growing disappearances will be after them, too. Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare, this is a chilling thriller with a touch of magic where the dead don't always seem to stay that way.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
My Rating: 4 stars - I really liked and enjoyed it!
Review: Where to start? I admit normally I would shy away from this book just because it's not normally something I would like I'm not really into the whole steam punk/alternate history, all those kinds of things, but I saw all the hype for this one and I couldn't resit signing up for the blog tour and I must say I am really glad that I did because I would have missed out on a pretty freakin awesome book. I loved all the different kinds of magic and it was honestly nothing like what I thought it was going to be. First of all while Thea kind of sets everything in motion it didn't really feel to me like she was the main character, more like she was the first domino and Freddy and Nan were more of the main attraction. While I did love Thea I enjoyed the other characters more and was really glad that they played as a big a part as they did. This book is filled with magic and mystery and it's...intoxicating I want to say. It really does pull you into this world and I highly enjoyed every minute of it. I honestly can't think of anything that I disliked about it, that's not to say it was perfect, it's not the best book I ever read while it was intoxicating it didn't leave me breathless but it's definitely worth the read.
A Few Of My Favorite Things -
-The Magic - I feel like I have never read anything quite like this especially when it comes to Freddy and Nan and their magics. I don't want to give it away but it's very unique and it was definitely my favorite thing about this book.
-Nan - I loved Nan. I loved the magic about her, I loved her personality, I loved Sigi, I just really really liked her character and her parts were probably my favorites.
-Freddy - I loved that he was way more than just the love interest. I loved seeing his struggle when he realized that he maybe wasn't doing all the good that he always thought he was. I just loved him and I loved that the romance between him and Thea was slow and in the background it didn't take over everything the way so many YA books do.
Overall - Basically while it's not the best book that ever was it was more than enjoyable and just fun, honestly. =)
Would I Recommend This? Yes.
Who To? Fans of Mortal Instruments, really the blurb is not lying about this. Also anyone looking for a fun fast read.
Will I read more from this author(or series)? Definitely.
