Danny Goldstein has always lived in the shadow of his identical twin brother, Sam. But when a hurricane of events forces him into the spotlight, he starts to realize that the only thing he’s truly afraid of is himself.

With the help of his costume changing friend Cher, a famous uncle with a mysterious past of his own, two aging punk rocker parents and Rusty, the boy who will become his something to live for, Danny begins to realize that the music of the heart is truly the soundtrack for living.

I received this book from the publisher through Netgalley to review honestly

My Rating: 4 stars - I really...liked it.

Review: Where to start? Once more I find myself very conflicted when reviewing. So first of all, you might know this by now, I am a sucker for a contemporary book with even the smallest music theme, so I saw this cover and it called to me. I requested the book before I read the description...yeah. Let's just jump right in, okay?

A brief synopsis - This book is about lots of things; death, music, love, teen pregnancy, friendship and learning to live. Danny has always followed his twin brother, Sam, Danny's friends were Sam's friends. Danny's clothes looked like Sam's clothes. He knew how to be a twin and that was it. And then on the day Danny comes out to his parents, Sam dies. Danny has to figure out how to deal with his twins death and how to live his own life.

Let's Talk -

Characters -
Danny - I had mixed feelings for Danny, he irritated and annoyed me and yet I felt so bad for him and so happy for him when he was happy and just...so many feelings. He was real, when I was annoyed with him it was because he was needy and sometimes pathetic and it's was real, you know? The way a person in love for the first time, a person who just lost his brother and whose family is falling apart, would act and I can appreciate that.

Rusty(the love interest) - I really liked Rusty. I thought their relationship was a little fast moving, not quite insta love but close, and I hated the way he treated Danny in a couple parts, but I still liked him a lot. I loved that he had his own troubles and that he wasn't afraid to point that out to Danny, repeatedly. Also the fight scene...I love a good fight scene.

Cher - Okay so crappy name, good back story to the name though. I wanted more of Cher, she obviously had her own stuff going on and I wanted to know more about it and how it was affecting her, I wanted Danny to care a little more I guess. I even wanted to see more of her relationship with her mom and I just wanted more of her.

Alex - Again I wanted him to be a slightly bigger part but I really loved him from what we did get to see.

Danny's Parents - I really liked his mom and I loved seeing the glimpses of her and Alex's friendship, I didn't really like his dad, he was barely in it and basically just didn't matter in my opinion.

Everything Else -
Music - I loved the music stuff that was in the background, they were always listening to something, and Rusty made him mixed tapes and everything. Again I'm a sucker for anything that shows the power of an awesome song.

Relationships - While I think most of the relationships could have been more developed I still enjoyed them. Especially the friendships and Danny's relationship with Alex and his mom.

Bullying - I liked that this issue was addressed but at the same time I felt a tiny bit cheated on this front, for most of the book it's just ignored and I understand to Danny it was just a part of life, and I really loved the way his mom handled it, but at the same time I think it should have been a slightly bigger part.

Overall - I really enjoyed this book, it's a fast read, it will have you cringing in sympathy and smiling wide and I think it will generally leave you happy with the ending. It lacks some character development and backstory but overall it's a really good book.
