2014 Night Of Writing Dangerously Recap!

What is the Night Of Writing Dangerously? It's a really fun part of NaNoWriMo(National Novel Writing Month), where 225 people converge in a ballroom in San Francisco to write!

So, as you may know, I went to Night Of Writing Dangerously last Sunday! was my first. It was pretty freaking awesome! Sadly I don't have a ton of pictures to share as I really failed at remembering to take them...I was busy writing! But I will do my best to recap the event for you!

First of all, early Sunday morning my mom and I made the 6 hour drive to San Francisco, which in itself was fun, lots of singing and shouting... Then Sunday night...the Night Of Writing Dangerously... I was really nervous as I do not do well in social makes me nervous and anxious and basically it sucks. But, I forced myself to do it, I didn't even try and drag my brother along as a buffer of sorts, which is really big for me!

Anyway, so you walk into a fairly small and cramped ballroom which is on the 15th floor of a fancy looking building. The ballroom is complete with high ceilings and low lighting, tables are packed to within inches from each other and people are everywhere! Some with laptops, some with notebooks(handwriting! It's not dead!), there's soft music and loud voices. It's slightly overwhelming, especially when it comes to finding a table! Off to one side they have a table set up with raffles(lots of books being given away!) and another table chocked full of candy! Lots and lots of candy! Then you have the table with the coffee(it also had ice water and various teas, but coffee is the important part!), lots and lots of coffee, with every kind of sugar you could want(they had sugar cubes! I took some because, Finnick), milk and cream... I loved the coffee... It was delicious.

I wound up chosing a table right near the entrance because I didn't want to wade through the masses to find another one. All older women at my table and they were all super nice and funny! We all got a lot of writing done too...which is kind of the point! Now let's talk about some highlights, okay?

-Candy buffet It needs to be mentioned because it was awesome. There was chocolate and not chocolate and more chocolate.

-Table Word Wars! This was my favorite part because it was really fun. Basically, you have two hours and whatever table writes the most wins. Really simple and really fun, because your whole table is working towards winning and you know if you do it's been a team effort.

-Winning the 1st Table War! So there were two table wars and we won the first! It was great mainly because we'd(at least I) totally forgotten about it and then bam. We won. I suppose I will divulge our table name... So no one wanted to suggest anything but we had to name our table, finally one of them was like "it's too much pressure. We're like pressure cookers". So everyone else was like, 'perfect, let's be The Pressure Cookers!'... Then they added Divas.. We were The Pressure Cooker Divas... But the second table to win was something like The Dongs(possibly Gongs)... So we didn't have the weirdest name!

-Cupcakes! Seriously they were so good... They had red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, and carrot cake... I had red velvet and then snuck one out that I took with me all the way back from San Francisco for my brother!

-Writing! While it was sometimes hard to concentrate(even with headphones) it was really fun, knowing you're in a room full of other writers, writing right along with you. That was really awesome. Also I got about 7,000 pretty dang good!

Word Sprints - Word sprints are like the word wars, but everyone is by themselves and it's for shorter periods of time. I don't like word sprints so I didn't do that, but it was fun watching everyone else(including my table mates) participate and all the screaming when they won.

So, yeah. It was awesome. There was also some speeches one of which lead to tap dancing... that was pretty epic in itself. Pretty great food, and lots of awesome company! I feel like I'm forgetting something, but this has been a long post's the few pictures I managed to take!

A table in the bar!

The outside of the building....

The first thing you see in the building before you go up the elevators...

My goody bag!

What I won from the 1st Table War!

Obviously I took pictures of all the important things....

Lastly special shout outs to: my mom's friends: Renee and Michele, and; Shannon Miz for all donating through my fundraising page months ago!

What's something you had to force yourself to do, but ended up having so much fun at/with?

  1. Aw, YAY! I am glad you had such a great time, it looks like it was a ton of fun! And the building is so pretty. I am really happy that you were able to make it to this event, and even more glad that it was so great for you :)

Also, I now want cupcakes and coffee, so thanks for that. ;)

    1. Thanks! And your welcome, cupcake and coffee are great things to want! =)

  2. WOW THIS LOOKS SO FUN :D And the food looks quite delicious too haha! I'm really glad you enjoyed, though. I wish I could go to an event like that, but sadly my family doesn't really support my love for writing :(( I'm super jealous of you! One day I'll be able to go to an event like that, I swear.

by the way, I've been seeing your NaNoWriMo posts a lot (which are very interesting), but what is NaNoWriMo exactly? :) It sounds very interesting to me because I love writing! ^_^

    1. Haha, yes it was quite awesome! I really hope you get a chance to do something like it!

NaNoWriMo is a challenge of sorts, it stands for National Novel Writing Month and basically you sign up on the website and then you try and write a novel(usually 50,000 words) in just one month! It's in November but there are camp sessions in April and July too! Usually I try and mention what it is in every post but I keep forgetting! You should definitely check it out if you have time(either next year or for camp) it all happens online and it's really fun! Let me know if you have any other questions and I'm glad you find my posts interesting!

  3. Huzzah! It was my first time at #NOWD too! Oh man, did I have a great time. I wish I had a chance to meet MORE people though!

I'm glad you had a fun time too!

  4. Yay! I've been looking forward to this post. :) I figured you'd forget to take pictures, I mean you were there to write after all. Yes yes, I so understand the stress of being around so many people. A candy table and book contests, what more could you want. Pressure cookers is a great name! (Not weird, considering these are writers) Wow on 7k! I'm glad you had fun.
