Changes? In Which I Overthink Everything!

Okay, so I've seen quite a few blog posts about pen names and just general discussion of why you use a fake name and how much in general you share about your real life when blogging, but I want to discuss something a little different that I've been considering for a while now.

Aka:

I can't make these kinds of decisions by myself!

As I'm sure you know(or if you don't because you're new to here it's fairly easy to figure out) I obviously don't use my real name or even a good fake name. I would hope that everyone knows Nobody is not my real name. I'm sure people can come up with a hundred or more reasons that you would think someone uses that name and I'll explain my reasons in a minute, but the reason for this post is... Since I created my writing blog in which I use a different pen name, I've been thinking of changing my name here. I was thinking of changing it to be the same name I use on that blog which is Alex Steele(my awesome spy name), but now I'm thinking my real name....

Okay, so some people use a pen name because they don't want to use their real name for one reason or another, maybe for privacy purposes or because they don't want to be stalked by authors, this isn't why I use a fake name. The thought never crossed my mind. People might use the name Nobody because they feel like a nobody...also not the reason I use the name. It actually started a long time before I started blogging and it was for my writing. I was like 13 and I thought it was very mysterious, and that it would be awesome to have a book by Nobody. I'm reluctant to give this name up(not only because by now I use it for lots and lots of things) but because it was actually a really big part of who I am and was.

Basically, by using this name I could separate myself from my writing and it kind of became my alter ego when I first started writing, and it helped to write in many ways(again I was 13 and this is the way my brain worked then!). It kind of helped me separate myself from my writing and kind of made it less...scary?

So, when I started this blog it was just natural to use the name however now...sadly...I feel like I've outgrown the name. I don't think I'd ever use it if I published a book and more than that I kind of want my followers to know my real name!

The problem being...how do you change your name? I mean obviously it's actually very easy but....it's also kind of confusing for readers, right? Because all my links for like Top Ten Tuesday and such would no longer be Nobody @ The Story Goes... and my Twitter would no longer be Nobody @TheStoryGoes_ and my Goodreads would no longer be Nobody(The Story Goes...) and anytime I comment it would no longer say Nobody. Of course, people change their blogs name all the time and no one really gets confused so I suppose this isn't as big a deal...right?

Basically, this isn't so much a discussion as something I really want a second and third and ninetieth opinion on... If I did change it it would just be my first name and I wouldn't change anything else really... I'm just conflicted. Once I have a better idea of whether people think it would be confusing then I can decide if I'm ready to get rid of this name that I've kind of held on to maybe a bit too long.

So, please tell me your opinions because I am bad at making decisions of any kind! Do you think it would confuse people or am I just thinking too much?

  1. I think you might be thinking too much. ;) I'm pretty sure most people would understand who you are if you change your name from Nobody to your real name. Especially since you don't change your blog name. I mean, it's as you say, hopefully people get that Nobody isn't your name.. :)

    1. Haha, maybe I should just legally change my name to Nobody and then I can stop overthinking everything...? =)

      Thanks, Petra!

  2. I'm very certain people would still recognize you despite the name change. I mean, it's very common in the internet for people to use usernames/pen names. I think it's okay if you want to change your name because people will still know that it's you - as long as your accounts still link to your blog or you use your blog button/logo etc. :)

But of course, it's entirely your decision whether you want to or not. I'm okay with either way because both sides would seem fine :)

    1. Thanks, Jillian! Yeah, I really think I'm going to change it, I feel like it's mostly just cause I've kind of outgrown my reasons for using it in the first place and now...it just feels almost...childish or something? Obviously, still overthinking it!

  3. Nahhh it's not a big deal hahah. I mean I already know your real name, but even if you change it to something other than that I probably wouldn't be confused hahaha.

    1. Yeah, I'm beginning to realize just how much I overthink things! Haha!

Thanks for your input, Val! =)

  4. No, I don't think this will be hard at all! Holly just changed her whole blog's name, and if anything, I think she has MORE followers now! Yours would be much easier, because you'd still be @The Story Goes... Just instead of Nobody @ The Story Goes... you'd be... well, you know who you'd be. I know who you'd be. At this point, likely a whole bunch of us know who you'd be- which is a good thing, because fewer people you'd have to worry about ;)

Basically, I don't think it will confuse anyone. PLUS, it'd be a great way to have a big old bloggish party, and we could all help you by linking to your "unveiling" post, so it'd spread easier!

    1. Haha, yeah that's what I was thinking. At most it would probably take all of three seconds for someone to figure out the change, I just over think everything! And yes, I've noticed that more people than I even realized already now my real name! Some of them I don't even know how happened, I think you figured it out when I emailed you because you won my giveaway? And I told Jillian but besides that, beats me!

I hadn't thought about a big unveiling post, but that would be really awesome! Now I only have to make an awesome unveiling post...no pressure...

Thanks, Shannon, I definitely think I'll be changing it now! =)

  5. When I was younger I always used a fake name online. It was what I was going to use as a pen name, but then I decided to just be myself when I started this blog. I totally understand your reasons for being Nobody. I'd say if you feel like you've outgrown your name you should change it. I think we'd all still know who you were.

    1. Thanks for your input Molly, I really appreciate it, especially since you've used a fake name before! And yeah, since posting this I've realized even more that I have outgrown the name so I do think I'm going to change it. Just have to figure out a cool reveal post for it! =)

  6. YOU SHOULD DO WHATEVER YOUR HEART DESIRES.

I changed my name back in November, and I so understand your reservations. And I also understand the feeling of outgrowing the one you have. Changing the name was the BEST choice for me! I don't think it's been *too* hard for my followers to stop thinking of my old one, and they were all really cool with it. So, if you feel like you want to change your name, DO IT!! We'll all still follow you and it might be hard and confusing at first, but WE'LL BE COOL WITH IT.

And the fact that I really want to know your real name is just a bonus. :P

    1. Haha thanks! I am definitely going to do it, I mean it's can't be that confusing, everyone figured it out easily enough when you changed your whole blog name(of course it helps that your blog name is epic!)! I just overthink things!

Haha, yes! Finally. I've been waiting for years to find someone who thinks it's a mystery as much as I do! =D
