Top Ten Tuesday #53: Inspiring Quotes!

"Top Ten Inspiring Quotes from Books"

Umm. I love collecting quotes inspirational and otherwise but I will try to limit myself. =) Also, I'm counting quotes that might not be in books but are from authors. Also, what counts as inspiring? Most my picks are just quotes I love that inspire me to write equally epic books... Eh. Good enough for me!

“Words were different when they lived inside of you.”
― Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

But if I'm it, the last of my kind, the last page of human history, like hell I'm going to let the story end this way. I may be the last one, but I am the one still standing. I am the one turning to face the faceless hunter in the woods on an abandoned highway. I am the one not running but facing. Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity. And if this is humanity's last war, then I am the battlefield.”
― Rick Yancey, The 5th Wave

“Take down the walls.
That is, after all, the whole point.
You do not know what will happen if you take down the walls; you cannot see through to the other side, don't know whether it will bring freedom or ruin, resolution or chaos. It might be paradise or destruction.
Take down the walls.
Otherwise you must live closely, in fear, building barricades against the unknown, saying prayers against the darkness, speaking verse of terror and tightness.
Otherwise you may never know hell; but you will not find heaven, either. You will not know fresh air and flying.
All of you, wherever you are: in your spiny cities, or your one bump towns. Find it, the hard stuff, the links of metal and chink, the fragments of stone filling your stomach.
And pull, and pull, and pull.
I will make a pact with you: I will do it if you will do it, always and forever.
Take down the walls.”
― Lauren Oliver, Requiem

“Just... isn't giving up allowed sometimes? Isn't it okay to say, ‘This really hurts, so I’m going to stop trying’?”
“It sets a dangerous precedent.”
“For avoiding pain?”
“For avoiding life.”
― Rainbow Rowell, Fangirl
(This one speaks to my soul)

"It doesn’t matter what other people think. The only opinion that really matters is yours. We are all the writers of our lives. We can make our stories comedies or tragedies. Tales of horror, or of inspiration. Your attitude and your fortitude and courage are what determine your destiny, Nick.… Life is hard and it sucks for all. Every person you meet is waging his or her own war against a callous universe that is plotting against them. And we are all battle-weary. But in the midst of our hell, there is always something we can hold on to, whether it’s a dream of the future or a memory of the past, or a warm hand that soothes us. We just have to take a moment during the fight to remember that we’re not alone, and that we’re not just fighting for ourselves. We’re fighting for the people we love.”

― Sherrilyn Kenyon, Inferno
(I aspire to be Sherrilyn Kenyon because she write epic badass stories with zombies and demons and all kinds of other supernatural creatures and then she throws in stuff like this and the next quote.)

“You've been my teachers, clergy, my fellow students, coworkers, bosses, principals, sometimes you were a former friend or even family I once trusted. You've taken things I told you in utter confidence, and twisted them into lies to be used against me. Without cause, you have told lies against me. You have refused to see me as a human being. You have kicked me when I was up and you have kicked me when I was down. But today, you will kick me no more, I will no longer be your verbal or physical punching bag. Today, I discovered the secret that will never allow you or your friends, who will one day turn on you too, to hurt me again. Today as I lay broken and bleeding in that dark place I crawl into when I think I can't take it anymore, I found something extraordinary. My humanity. As my soul screamed in bleeding agony and I wanted to die rather than live one more day in a world where you exist, I realized that my tears and ability to feel pain without lashing out to return that hurt to someone else makes me human.”
― Sherrilyn Kenyon, Inferno

“So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their endings.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
(This book makes me sob...)

“Everybody has a secret world inside of them. I mean everybody. All of the people in the whole world, I mean everybody — no matter how dull and boring they are on the outside. Inside them they've all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds... Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands, maybe.”
― Neil Gaiman
(Still speaking to my soul.)

"Writing stories is a kind of magic, too.”
― Cornelia Funke, Inkheart

“We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
(Sirius!)

Bonus: House Of Hades round(AKA, my favorite book from my favorite series):

“Tell the sun and stars hello for me.”
― Rick Riordan, The House of Hades
(Bob!)

“But magic is neither good nor evil. It is a tool, like a knife. Is a knife evil? Only if the wielder is evil.”
― Rick Riordan, The House of Hades
(When I wield a knife my brothers call me evil...)

“I figure the world is basically a machine. I don't know who made it, if it was the Fates, or the gods, or the capital-G god or whatever. But it chugs along the way it's supposed to most of the time. Sure, little pieces break off and stuff goes haywire once in a while, but mostly... things happen for a reason.”
― Rick Riordan, The House of Hades
(Dang Leo, you deep.)

“Nico, I've seen a lot of brave things. But what you just did? That was maybe the bravest.”
― Rick Riordan, The House of Hades
(Nico has my undying love as does Rick Riordan.)

Okay...I could go on, but I won't.

Are you the kind of person who likes to collect quotes? I've been known to stop in the middle of reading to write down quotes that I really like. =)

  1. I adore basically every word that spews from Lauren Oliver. It was hard to choose just one from her! And the Neil Gaiman quote... OMG I love it. LOVE. IT. I mean, I need to make a graphic for it and hang it up somewhere. These are really, really great! I need to start keeping quotes more often! I write down the page of them, but then I end up throwing the paper away! It's bad.
