In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world.
When a group of people capture Penryn's sister, Paige, thinking she's a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.
Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels' secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.
Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?
I received this book from the publisher through Netgalley to review honestly

My Rating:

Review:

The World After picks up right where Angelfall ended. Penryn is paralyzed in the back of a resistance truck, everyone thinks she's dead, her sister Paige is...different and Raffe is gone with his new demon wings.

I have very mixed thoughts on this book. I had issues with the end of Angelfall because it just felt like a lot of random stuff was happening really fast with no explanations and it felt disconnected to the rest of the book to me. I had high hopes that I'd like this one more but... Nope. Don't get me wrong, I still really liked the first(my review here), basically the only problem I had with it was the end but with World After it was kind of the opposite, the only thing I didn't have a problem with was the end.

A few of my least favorite things:

What plot? I feel like basically nothing happened in this book. Like it was all a filler episode placed in the middle of a TV season. The first 70% of the book felt like a repeat of book one. Penryn trying to protect her mom and Paige, Penryn trying to find Paige and getting caught up in angle/resistance stuff. Penryn doing the same things over and over again except there was basically no Raffe so it was less interesting.

What world? Where's the world building? By world building I mean this book is basically full of descriptions of the scorpion monster angle hybrid things. I don't care that much about them! I want to know what's going on with Paige and the ANGLES! I still basically know nothing about why the angles are here and what exactly is going on. Seriously, give me something!

A few of my favorite things:

Penryn. She's still awesome and badass. She still has her flaws and makes her mistakes, but she's a very strong and unique main character. Also, she names the angel sword Pooky Bear and really what could be more badass?

Slow romance. Penryn and Raffe are barely even a romance, especially considering Raffe doesn't even come into this book until the last fourth of the novel, but I love their ship so much. I love that it's barely there yet very well written.

The writing. I have to hand it to the author, she is a really really good writer. Even with being bored I could not put the book down, all the characters are amazing and REAL. The action scenes are great and the relationships even better.

Overall: I just wanted more story. Again this felt like filler, it picked up in the last fourth but still...not much at all happened. A bunch or running around, looking for Paige, hiding from and then fighting angles and scorpion beasts, some random dream sword training. There were a few little things here and there, but in the end it felt more like a repeat of the first book than a continuation of the story.

Would I Recommend This? Yes.
To Whom? People who read and loved the first, duh!
Will I read more from this author(or series)? Yes. I'm really not sure how much I'm going to like the next book because I feel like a lot has to happen in it but I will read it.

Here I am, being a black sheep because I know quite a few people thought this one was even better than the first.

  1. I totally agree with you on this book. The best parts are Penryn and Raffe together! Still the book was worth it just for that end!

I just read a review on the third one and now I've lowered my expectations.

    1. Haha, the end was pretty great!

Yeah, I didn't love the third. I saw a few not so good reviews so my expectations weren't too high but it was still kind of disappointing! I've spent over a week trying to figure out what to say in my review of it. =)
