I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.
Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.
Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.
Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.
Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.
It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

My Rating:

Review:

I'm sure most of you have heard of this book by now, and of this phenomenal author, plus I just don't think I could explain if I tried so I'll skip over most of my synopsis. Basically, this book follows Adelina, who was marked by a deadly illness when she was young. Known as a Malfetto, people like Adelina are thought to be unnatural, demons. All her life her father has hated her for this and for the fact that she's useless. Where some Malfettos (deemed the Young Elites) have powers, Adelina has never shown the slightest hint of possessing her own. Until the fateful night she tries to run away...

I really enjoyed this book, Adelina is a strong and unique unreliable character, she has that whole crazy/might be evil thing going for her but also she's just really confused and hurt and not really sure what's going on or what to do. Thumbs up for crazy unreliable narrators and awesome powers that I've never read about before. On the other hand though... I couldn't really connect with her. I don't think you're necessarily supposed to, but I just didn't feel much for her and by association the other characters.

This book is really fast paced and there's never a dull moment, the writing is intense and breathtaking. But the world and plot were...not really confusing just not fully fleshed out, I think. There wasn't a lot of world building, so you basically, I feel, get to known the minimum amount. Just what was absolutely necessary so that the reader isn't 100% confused. I liked it because it fit Adelina and the story, and kept things fresh and fast paced but also, I just felt disconnected from the story and the characters and everything that was going on. It didn't feel as life threatening as it could've.

I feel like I'm talking about a lot of downsides but they're not necessarily downsides. On the one hand, I loved all these things but on the other it made me feel a bit disconnected from the story.

I loved the powers and how unique them and the whole world was, I wanted a little more but I'm expecting that to come in the sequel so that could balance everything out. I loved how dark and gritty this book was and that there really wasn't one cliche in the characters and story. Full of twists and surprises and you never really know if Adelina is evil or crazy or what. Which just gives me grabby hands.

One thing I struggled with was the side characters. I already didn't connect to Adelina as much as I wanted to, and, on top of that, we don't get to know any of the side characters really at all. I loved her sister and how their relationship evolved over the course of the book but I never really understood any of the other characters like I wanted to. There wasn't a lot of development and there was insta love that felt kind of forced.

Overall: I did really enjoy reading this one, it's so different and refreshing that I have to recommend it, especially to fans of this author. It's a really solid read and there's so much potential for the next book that I am absolutely dying to read it.

Villain Identity/Squad Tag:

So for this tag you must create a super villain identity! Name yourself, pick a power, make a badge if you like. And then tag people to add them to your squad! I admit, I stalked a few people who did this and then kind of just winged it... Also, don't' judge my badge, I was low on time!

I present to you my Super villain identity:

Alias: Artemis: The Book Hunter
Tagline: Artemis: The Book Hunter, travels the world, taking the form of any animal she wishes. Causing chaos, destruction, and *gasp* stealing books!
Powers: Shapeshifting
Description: Tends to take the form of a dove, because who would look for a dove when trying to catch a villain!?
Choice Of Weapon: Books! (for throwing, clobbering, anything really)
Tends to wear: Animals... haha. It's my official villain costume.

It took me awhile to come up with this. I picked the name Artemis, after the Greek goddess, obviously. Because she's my favorite Goddess and I've always been obsessed with her and it's seems like a good name. Obviously being able to shape shift will come in very handy when it comes to being a villain, they'll never know what shape I've taken! They'll never catch me! Honestly, if I'm going to be a super villain, I would probably fly solo. BUT, squads are awesome and therefor I will attempt to recruit the following:

  1. Thanks for the tag sweetie. :) I must admit though, that I've no idea how to make a badge. So I'll just answer it here instead. I think I would be an excellent villain. My powers would be mind control and invisibility. And I would rule the world. I'll definitely need to think of a code name though. I'll be back (or just name myself the Petranator because of that last sentence). ;)

    1. Haha, it took me like a week to first figure out how to make a badge and I still can't make very good ones, so I completely understand! Haha, you already have the ego part down it sounds. ;) Good powers, might even beat my shapeshifting, I sincerely hope our villain squad doesn't fall apart and we start fighting each other... I like Petranator! I think it will strike fear into our enemies hearts(at least more so than mine). =)
