A Look Back and Forward: My Writing Life

I've decided to break up my end of the year posts and to start I'm looking back on my writing life this year!

As you probably know most my life currently revolves around writing with the hope of landing an agent and eventually being published. At the beginning of the year I wrote a few resolutions so I'm going to go through those and then share with you my writing-related resolutions for 2016!

I actually didn't have many writing goals for 2015. My thing was that I wanted to be working on something every month, I wanted to write a first draft or edit or revise or whatever, and have a project to do and finish every month, And I actually pretty much did that. March was complicated because of some family things. May was hard because I was moving. And December... I mean, does anyone get anything productive done in December???? I don't. Still, I'm really happy with how well I followed that.

I had a few more specific things but in the post where I announced them I even said I didn't HAVE TO get to them because you know, things come up. I wanted to rewrite and edit and query This World In Gray, which I did but is now being rewritten again after getting some advice and a few R&Rs (revise and resubmit). Which I'm ecstatic about because on one hand it sucks to think I first wrote this in November of 2014 and have been working on it ALL YEAR, on the other though, it's awesome because I've worked so hard and now it's SO CLOSE to being SOMETHING, you know?

I also wanted to rewrite Dragon Heir and Hunters Of Artemis and A War Of Queens and write the first draft to Forsaken... I didn't get to any of those but I did write my first straight up MG novel that I'm in love with. My first magical realism and my first science fiction novel and my first straight up love story, I wrote a retelling. So once again, at the end of the year, I'm left feeling like I really grew as a writer and learned so much and just that I'm better than I was last year and at least two dozen rejections closer to getting that one agent yes I need.

Goal wise I've been driving myself crazy a little trying to make a plan. As is I think I'm going to just leave myself open. Leave room for my muse to run free. I still want to consistently be working on something but maybe not as intensely as I did in 2015. I also want to finish perfecting TWIG and start querying it again. And I'm really looking forward to working on my first novel Dragon Heir again. Still I'm trying to stay laid back with big plans and just...write and edit and have fun. Leave room for new ideas and really get in touch with my muse. (I (mostly jokingly) view my muse as a real thing (like a sprite) I can talk to).

Besides that I would also like to focus on rewriting and editing more than drafting. I did some editing this year mostly on Ren & Farrah (my MG magical realism) and This World In Gray, but I have so many projects I want to revisit.

Again, this isn't a list I'm definitely going to follow but here's what I hope to have time to work on in 2016.

- Rewrite Dragon Heir

- Revise Alt. Ways

- Rewrite A War Of Queens

- Edit Immortals

- Figure out Narc Wonderland

- Write Saving Melody and Love In All It's Flavors and Day Of The Dead

Again, my main goal is just to WRITE. With any luck I'll hopefully find an agent who loves my book and believes in it, but I will be happy as long as I don't let myself get discouraged and just keep writing. I know I get better every year, every chapter, every sentence, so that's what I'm going to continue doing in the new year.

Also, I currently have a giveaway going on, a New Years themed giveaway where I'm looking ahead to one of my most highly anticipated 2016 releases by giveaway a preorder for Bookishly Ever After! Int as long as Book Depository ships to you, find the giveaway here!

Okay, now you share something about yyour year! If you're a writing what's your favorite thing you wrote this year? If you aren't a writer then what's a highlight from your year??

  1. I'm so glad we both have the goal this year to just write. I hope we can do just that. Feel free to check in with me if you need encouragement, accountability, or anything else!

I'm also impressed that you worked on something each month of the year. That's AWESOME. And I'm so glad you grew as a writer this year. I did too. It's the greatest feeling in the world. ♥

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and blog hiatus! Good to have you back. :)

    1. You might regret making that offer, I've been known to bug people a lot on Twitter. But I will totally do that, thanks, Sky! Yeah, I think it's really important to kind of just chill this year and WRITE.

It is the greatest feeling in the world and I love that as long as you're doing something writing wise you always end up learning and growing as a writer, at least, i think so. It was so exhausting though, like I'm proud of what I did in 2015 but I'm really looking forward to just having fun with my projects this year.

      Thank you! <3
