Beautiful People #2 In 2016 I. Shall. WRIIIIITE.

Okay, so I've done this a few times here before, I've also down Beautiful People on my old writing blog, and the NaNo version Beautiful Books. If you don't know it's ran by Cait and Sky and it's super fun and perfect for writers and I've decided I'm going to start doing it every month not only because it's awesome but also because I'm going to try to post once a week about writing this year and this fits perfectly!

Anyway! This month is awesome because it's basically new years resolution based questions! Let's do this.


1. What were your writing achievements last year? Hmm, define achievements? Let's see, I won Camp NaNo in April and July, regular NaNo in November. I wrote a few new novels and spent a good eight months working on perfecting my main novel.


2. Tell us about your top priority writing project for this year? I have two. One is to finally finish perfecting my main novel, the one I spent many months last year revising and editing and revising and editing, I'm SO CLOSE. And the second, is the first novel I ever wrote, Dragon Heir. I'm finally going to rewrite it and make it better than abomination that is its current draft.


3. List 5 areas you’d like to work the hardest to improve this year. Setting and world building, I'm horrible at setting which is one of the main things wrong with Dragon Heir right now, it's set on this huge amazing world that I never really describe in the actual book. I'd like to get better at writing effective plot the first time through. Plot is where I really struggle, honestly. I would like to get better at short stories. I tend to start them and then forget all about them. I really need to work at not being afraid to go back to fantasy, fantasy was the first thing I wrote and then I kind of abandoned it and haven't touched it since. I also need to work on my characters ages in that I tend to have them not act their age a lot, if that makes sense.


4. Are you participating in any writing challenges? Um, as in? Nothing really but I plan on doing both April and July Camp NaNoWriMo as well as regular NaNo in November.


What's your critique partner/beta reader situation like and do you have plans to expand this year? I have a few CPs who I really love. But I would like to expand, I'm firm believer you can't have too many. I'm just not really good at friending CPs, like, the ones I have I got through a matchmaking service, I never know how to like, turn writing friends into CPs... Do you just straight up ask them if they're interested? What if they say no? Okay, this is a long answer.


Do you have plans to read any writer-related books this year? Or are there specific books you want to read for research? Yes. I'm finally going to read Wonderbook. Also, Steven King's On Writing because I got it for Christmas and am so excited to finally read it. Research-wise, no idea. I plan on reading some more MG fantasy to get in the mood for writing Dragon Heir but, who knows?


Pick one character you want to get to know better, and how are you going to achieve this? Cass and Cori from Dragon Heir. I really want to work more on getting to know all my Dragon Heir characters and to start I need to go back to their histories and refigure them out as their backstories are very flawed and cliched and just, need work. So that's where I'm starting.


Do you plan to edit or query, and what’s your plan of attack? Yes and yes. My main novel, that I've been working on for about 14 months is in it's last (I swear to the boggart under my bed it's the last one) rewrite. I'm going to let it sit, then read through and edit it. Send it to my CPs for the last time and then start querying it again. Besides that, I'm planning on editing Ren&Farrah, which I wrote for Camp last year. And once Dragon Heir's been written and sat for a bit it's also going to be edited a ton. Um, my plan of attack is to actually do these things and figure it out along the way...?


Toni Morrison once said, “If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.” What are the books that you want to see more of, and what “holes” do you think need filling in the literary world? A hole I think needs filling is fantasy with LGBT characters and/or characters with mental illnesses and the like. Also, just in general, more YA with male main characters and more MG with female main characters. There's definitely MG with female MCs and YA with male ones, but I feel like you're more likely to find MG with male and YA with female, which is....stupid.


What do you hope to have achieved by the end of 2016? Basically, I just want to have written and grown as a writer and hopefully learned a thing or two. I want to have written and edited and had fun. I want to write more second drafts than first and to have written more straight up MG because the one I've written is kind of my favorite book ever. And...I want to have tried my hand at fantasy again, it is my first love after all. I want to have written so much that words ooze out of my skin like blood...

  1. Fantasy = endless love for fantasy for me too. :') And so much rewriting and editing!! GO SHAY!! And omg yes I have a zillion first drafts and like 2 rewritten ones. And every time I rewrite a book and leave it for a year...I realise how bad my writing was back then and I NEED TO REWRITE AGAIN. *collapses* It is rather an anguishable (totally a word) battle.

  2. First of all, excellent use of Harry Potter gifs! Second of all, I'm totally with you about setting and world building. I have a lot of trouble with them too! I would have no idea how to ask people to be my CP either haha; I just have a friend who's also a writer and she's my informal writing buddy. Anyway, good luck for your goals, Shay! This is my first time in the Beautiful People link-up, and I look forward to hear more about Dragon Heir in the future :D As for my goals, I'm hoping to just finish the ONE first draft this year before I even think about having more, haha.

  3. Lots of great goals! I wish you the best with them and yesss Harry Potter gifs! Also I've noticed that too about YA and MG. I want more YA boys main characters.
